SMWD's Lake Mission Viejo Advanced Treated Water Facility Receives Award from Green Technology

First Lake in California to Use Advanced Treated Water for Lake Refill

The Lake Mission Viejo Advanced Treatment Water Project received another recognition this year; this time from Green Technology, for its innovative public-private partnership and significant water conservation and efficiency.

Lake Mission Viejo is a man-made lake constructed in 1976 and was first filled with potable water in 1978. On October 10, 2016, the lake became the first swimming and recreational lake in California to use highly treated recycled water instead of drinking water for lake refill, saving 114 million gallons of drinking water every year.

The Santa Margarita Water District, City of Mission Viejo, and Lake Mission Viejo Association formed a strong public-private partnership to fast-track and build the facility. It treats highly purified recycled water further with ultrafiltration, reverse osmosis, and ultraviolet light for direct discharge and use in Lake Mission Viejo.

Congratulations to our partners, City of Mission Viejo and Lake Mission Viejo Association, and the community whom enjoys the sustainable lake!
