Free Water Education Assemblies Provided to Elementary Schools

SMWD offers free Water Education Assemblies to students who attend elementary schools located in the SMWD service area through the Discovery Science Center and the regional family of water agencies. These assemblies are grade-specific and align with the California State Science Content Standards.

  • The importance and scarcity of water in Southern California
  • The water cycle
  • The three sources of water
  • Water storage, filtration, treatment, recycling and conservation

Chiquita Wastewater Treatment Plant Tours

The plant treats wastewater from homes in the area and prepares it to be reused to irrigate parks, common areas and golf courses. The tour is a great opportunity to learn first-hand about:

  • What happens to the water  after it goes down the drain
  • How wastewater gets travels from homes to the treatment plant
  • How water is treated to be used as recycled water
  • How to conserve water every day
